Editors:
why you need one and where you'll find one
Kind
of editor: Developmental
Why
you need one: For when you are just starting off. These editors are your go-to when
you're on page 53 and you figure out that your character has a major
defect that you just can't figure out how to fix, or when you figure
out that your plot is bland.

| Developmental editors can really help upcoming authors map out the direction of their work. |
Why
people avoid them: Authors think they might change ideas because they know them even
before they are put on paper. Their influence may mess with author
creativity.
Why
people should stop
avoiding them: A developmental editor will not tell you what to change, and only
make suggestions and be there for you to bounce ideas. They have an
influence but it's rather positive. If they have to change your
entire story it's a good sign the book is not worth your (or their)
bother.
Where
to find one: Often,
developmental editors are freelance. Try a search engine to
find hints of where to look locally, and ask local friends. Also,
because developmental editors are often graduates of literature and
creative writing degree programmes, check with local universities.

I have enjoyed reading the first 3/4 of your posts! I hadn't looked into editors all that much, but I'm so glad that you distinguished them so well!
