We Can Change the World

They say that the pen is mightier than the sword. When it comes to a physical battle I’m sure that most of us would prefer a sword to face our foes with, but on a larger scale - say, forging or fighting a reputation - words have proven to be one of the most efficient weapons a person can wield. Sometimes weapons are used to maintain a state, but more often than not they are used to aid change.

Turn on the news or open a newspaper and you have proof that writing can change the world, and that it does so every day. Think back to a time you were actually enraged about something on a larger scale than just your hometown or university. The event took place and you heard of it through newspapers, broadcasts, and your friends’ posts on Facebook. The news of this event spread rapidly and, almost out of no where, everyone is charged with energy from what they’ve been hearing.

Hearing.

You did not see it for yourself. You heard about it. People wrote things down and sent it to friends, posted it in blogs such as these, and slowly but surely everyone knew what happened and nobody likes it.

That’s when the change begins.

When word gets out about a scandal, the person involved is shamed. When a company’s evil deeds are discovered, it is boycotted. When a tragic event happens, the people involved gather together and demand change.

All of this is possible through the power of writing.
